About CenturyLink Investment Management (CIM)

CenturyLink Investment Management Company (CIM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lumen Technologies and serves as the named fiduciary responsible for the investment management of Lumen’s employee benefit assets. CIM oversees approximately $12 billion across defined benefit pension plans, defined contribution plans, and related trusts. Responsibilities include asset allocation and portfolio construction; selection, monitoring, and termination of external investment managers; oversight of internally managed strategies; and investment governance, risk management, and documentation.

The Role

The Director, Investments is a senior leadership role within CenturyLink Investment Management (CIM) responsible for hands‑on public equity portfolio oversight and for driving execution rigor, investment standards, and accountability across the investment team.

The role combines direct portfolio management with investment leadership and governance and serves as a key member of CIM’s Investment Committee and senior leadership team, which reviews and approves all significant investment and business decisions.

The Director, Investments is expected to operate independently as an experienced investor while elevating the quality, clarity, and timeliness of investment decision‑making across asset classes.

The role reports to the Chief Investment Officer and works closely with the Head of Asset Allocation, Portfolio Managers for Fixed Income and Alternative Investments, and Operations and Compliance leadership in shaping investment strategy and overseeing CIM’s portfolios.

The Main Responsibilities

1.     Investment Leadership

  • Lead the investment team responsible for implementing strategies across public equities, fixed income, and alternative assets.
  • Contribute to the development of investment strategies appropriate for CIM’s fiduciary portfolios and oversee effective implementation.
  • Supervise and support analysis of investment products, strategies, and portfolios.
  • Oversee investment recommendations from initial analysis through approval, documentation, and execution.
  • Supervise and coach seasoned investment professionals.
  • Ensure investment work is well‑structured, decision‑oriented, timely, and properly documented.
  • Oversee monitoring of trust assets at both the total‑portfolio and individual‑strategy levels.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships across the institutional investment ecosystem, including external managers, peers, advisors, custodians, and service providers.
  • Apply macroeconomic and market frameworks to improve timing, sizing, and implementation quality.
  • Supervise internally managed portfolios.

2.     Public Equity Portfolio Management

  • Serve as Portfolio Manager for public equity strategies with direct responsibility for:
    • Manager selection and termination
    • Portfolio construction and positioning
    • Ongoing monitoring and performance evaluation
  • Develop and articulate a clear public equity investment framework, including:
    • Key return drivers and risk factors
    • Active versus passive implementation decisions
    • Regional, style, and factor exposures
  • Prepare and present Investment Committee recommendations.

3.     Governance, Investment Committee & Leadership Team Participation

  • Serve as a standing member of the Investment Committee, which reviews and approves all significant investment and business decisions
  • Partner with the CIO and Head of Asset Allocation to ensure:
    • Alignment between strategy and execution
    • Clear ownership and accountability across teams
  • Contribute as a member of CIM’s senior leadership team, helping shape:
    • Investment culture
    • Process improvements
    • Talent development

What We Look For in a Candidate

  • 15+ years of institutional investment experience, including:
    • Deep expertise in public equity investing and a strong professional network
    • Meaningful exposure to fixed income and alternative assets
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Operate as a hands‑on Portfolio Manager
    • Lead and influence experienced investment professionals
    • Drive rigor, accountability, and execution quality
  • CFA designation strongly preferred
  • Collaborative, team‑oriented leadership style
  • Strategic and independent thinker with a strong passion for investing
  • Deep understanding of investment theory and practice, with sound judgment across market cycles
  • Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Clear, concise communicator with experience presenting to:
    • Investment Committees
    • Boards or senior fiduciary audiences
  • Familiarity with AI and interest in thoughtfully integrating advanced AI and other technology tools into the investment process
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)

Compensation

 

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

$207,239 - $276,318 in these states: AL  AR  AZ  FL  GA  IA  ID  IN  KS  KY  LA  ME  MO  MS  MT  ND  NE  NM  OH  OK  PA  SC  SD  TN  UT  VT  WI  WV  WY 
$217,606 - $290,134 in these states: CO  HI  MI  MN  NC  NH  NV  OR  RI 
$227,963 - $303,950 in these states: AK  CA  CT  DC  DE  IL  MA  MD  NJ  NY  TX  VA  WA
