The Role

The Sr. Director of Access Architecture and Engineering is a highly influential technical strategist and execution leader who is focused on creating network architectures, technical execution, development, and implementation of engineering solutions. They are responsible for solving complex technical challenges, optimizing current systems, and ensuring technical excellence in product and system development.

 

The Sr. Director of Access Architecture and Engineering leads the team to innovate, develop, and drive solutions, and/or unique architectural plays with long-term impact to the providers broader product portfolio, and across multiple technologies. A director of technology is viewed as a technical strategists and execution leaders. They help to guide business leaders in translating innovations into business opportunities, and they help peers and engineering leaders to drive fast and high-quality execution against those opportunities. This position is measured by their ability to influence and support a company’s executives and stakeholders in the execution of overall technical strategies with long-term business and technology impact. 

The Main Responsibilities

Technology Strategy

  • Participate in and/or lead network technology and system support reviews (as pertaining to network)
  • Create and advise on architectural solutions and systems supporting network technology
  • Provide vendor technical assessments, new product development and key technology decisions
  • Lead Product, Platform and Infrastructure innovation
  • Lead and advise in standards and open-source solutions
  • Work closely with business, operations, and technology leaders across the company
  • Write & review patent applications as opportunities are presented

Architectural / Product Design Leadership

  • Engage with Product Management on setting product and technology direction
  • Work with Engineering / Technology leadership to guide architectural/product design
  • Attend leadership senior staff meetings, leading design discussions and driving architectural decisions
  • Lead design & code reviews, ensuring conformance to design, standards, security, and interoperability with core architectures
  • Design and prototype new technologies, new products, and recommend novel ideas that may transform the business and the industry at large

Mentoring / Leading Other Engineers

  • Lead cross-organizational teams to solve Company-wide problems and drive architectural alignment
  • Lead forums and speak at internal conferences and events
  • Mentor direct reports, providing 1:1 guidance and feedback on design/construction decisions
  • Lead design reviews and code inspections to ensure quality, security, and interoperability.
  • Drive evaluation of Senior Technical Talent hiring, promotions, and skill progression.

Enhance Customer Interaction

  • Engage with Product Management and customer exec sponsors to advise and influence customers’ technology solutions as it applies to the company’s technical capabilities.
  • Advice on industry trends
  • Influence customers’ technology strategies through innovation discussions

Research and Industry Leadership

  • Bring fresh ideas, perspectives, and research outcomes into the company
  • Build, drive, and participate in various forums to evangelize technology, open source, and standards innovation
  • Author publications, white papers, architecture research, technical documentation for non-technical consumption, etc.
  • Own the selection process for R&D and innovative vendor solutions

What We Look For in a Candidate

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or master's degree in a related field
  • 10+ years of experience with network architecture and engineering design
  • Technical team leadership experience. (Previous management or designated team leader)
  • Strong understanding of key financial concepts, accounting and investment principles to drive financially sound technology innovation
  • Deep technical expertise and experience as a thought leader that helps accelerate adoption of the best engineering practices, while maintaining knowledge on industry innovations, trends and practices.
  • Access Technology Experience – GPON, XGS-PON, OLT/ONT, Residential Gateway, xDSL, BBDLC, Over-the-Top Technologies, etc.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to identify opportunities for application reuse and consolidation to build reusable capabilities reducing the time-to-delivery of critical features.
  • Experience in solution consulting to both technical and non-technical leadership

Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges

$174,876 - $291,460 in these states: AL  AR  AZ  FL  GA  IA  ID  IN  KS  KY  LA  ME  MO  MS  MT  ND  NE  NM  OH  OK  PA  SC  SD  TN  UT  VT  WI  WV  WY 
$183,621 - $306,034 in these states: CO  HI  MI  MN  NC  NH  NV  OR  RI 
$192,364 - $320,607 in these states: AK  CA  CT  DC  DE  IL  MA  MD  NJ  NY  TX  VA  WA
